Sport law

When a sporting decision is contested, the governing rules, the record and the route of appeal deserve close attention.

Disciplinary and governance issues

For an athlete, coach, club or governing body, a sporting dispute can turn on the current rules, the decision and the route of review. Keane is willing to consider suitable instructions for disciplinary and appeal advice or representation, selection challenges, anti-doping matters, safeguarding and integrity investigations, governance, contracts and written submissions in England and Wales.

Each instruction depends on the applicable sport or governing body's rules, forum, stage, conflicts, competence, papers and timetable. A general article does not establish that Keane has appeared in a particular forum or handled a particular type of case; no outcome is promised.

An early check

Start with the decision and the deadline.

For an internal appeal, identify the decision, governing body's rules, the date of notification and any applicable appeal deadline. It is important to know whether the process permits a rehearing, a review on limited grounds or another route altogether.

Time limits can be short; contacting a barrister does not suspend them. Seek urgent advice through an appropriate provider if a deadline is close.

How an instruction is approached

The first step is a conflict and suitability check. If the matter can be taken on, the agreed scope might be a written opinion, drafting or advocacy where authorised and appropriate. The fee, responsibilities and timetable are confirmed in writing before the instruction is accepted.
